Extramural Funding Opportunities in DEI Research

The Vice President for Research Office has collected a list of extramural funding opportunities as part of our on-going commitment to support equitable, diverse, and inclusive research on our campus and in our broader communities. All available opportunities are also published on this site, and will be updated bi-monthly. Please check each sponsor’s solicitation for the most up-to-date information for each program, as the sponsor may have changed details of the opportunity since it was posted here.

If you are considering applying for a DEI-related funding opportunity and would like grant development support, please contact Mercedes Ward, Grant Development Specialist for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH (NIH)

NIH Enhancing Science, Technology, EnginEering, and Math Educational Diversity (ESTEEMED) Research Education Experiences (R25 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Amount: $1,300,000 direct costs
Deadline: June 7, 2023; January 17, 2024

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH.  The overarching goal of this R25 program is to support educational activities that encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, to pursue further studies or careers in research. To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support educational activities with a primary focus on: Courses for Skills Development and Research Experiences. The ESTEEMED program is designed to foster the development of undergraduate freshmen and sophomores from diverse backgrounds to pursue further studies and careers in bioengineering or STEM fields relevant to NIBIB’s scientific mission. Applications are encouraged to propose integrated educational activities that include 3 elements: a summer bridge program for incoming freshmen, and in the freshman and sophomore years, academic year activities and summer research experiences. The ESTEEMED program is intended to expose students to bioengineering research early in their college careers while also providing students didactic, mentoring and career development opportunities. This will prepare students to join, in their junior and senior years, an honors program that promotes STEM and entrance into a Ph.D. program. The ultimate goal is for the participants to pursue a doctoral degree and a subsequent research career in bioengineering or NIBIB-relevant field.

NIH BRAIN Initiative Advanced Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity (K99/R00 Independent Clinical Trial Required)
Amount: The BRAIN Initiative intends to commit $4M per year in fiscal years 2024-2026 to fund an estimate of 20 awards per year.
Deadlines: June 14, 2023; October 13, 2023; February 13, 2024

The purpose of the NIH BRAIN Initiative Advanced Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity (K99/R00) program is to enhance diversity in the neuroscience workforce and maintain a strong cohort of new and talented, NIH-supported, independent investigators from diverse backgrounds, including those from underrepresented groups in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, in BRAIN Initiative research areas. This program is designed to facilitate a timely transition of outstanding postdoctoral researchers with a research and/or clinical doctorate degree from mentored, postdoctoral research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions. The program will provide independent NIH research support during this transition to assist awardees in launching independent research careers.

NIH Implementation Science for Cancer Control in People Living with HIV in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (U01 Clinical Trial Optional)
Amount: $2,500,000 direct costs
Deadline: December 15, 2023

The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to support Implementation Science for Cancer Control in People Living with HIV (PLWH) in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) to accelerate the integration of evidence-based cancer control interventions for PLWH by leveraging existing HIV treatment and prevention infrastructure. Specifically, this NOFO solicits applications that will identify, understand, and develop strategies to address barriers to the adoption, integration, and sustainability of evidence-based cancer control interventions among PLWH in LMICs and generate data in LMICs that can inform effective and equitable implementation of evidence-based cancer control for PLWH worldwide. Responsive applications should include multi-disciplinary teams of researchers with expertise in HIV, cancer, and implementation science to address the cancer control needs of PLWH populations specific to the proposed LMIC context.

Spencer Foundation: Racial Equity Research Grants
Amount: Up to $75,000
Intent to Apply Deadline: May 16, 2023 | Full Proposal Deadline: June 14, 2023

The Racial Equity Research Grants program supports education research projects that will contribute to understanding and ameliorating racial inequality in education. Our goal for this program is to support rigorous, intellectually ambitious, and technically sound research that is relevant to the most pressing questions and compelling opportunities in relation to racial equity in education. In this cycle of funding, we will continue to fund scholarship focused on a range of communities and issues with respect to equity. We encourage proposals from across the methodological spectrum, including qualitative methods, mixed-methods, and quantitative methods. We want to especially encourage proposals that utilize QuantCrit methods, social network analysis, geo-spatial mapping, and other quantitative methods that use critical lenses. As with other Spencer grant programs, this program is “field-initiated” in that proposal submissions are not required to be developed around a particular research topic, discipline, design, method, or geographic location.

American Philosophical Association: Diversity and Inclusiveness Grant Program
Amount: $20,000
Deadline: June 30, 2023

The American Philosophical Association, in keeping with its mission and goals and the association’s longstanding commitment to addressing philosophy’s serious lack of demographic diversity, will make available up to $20,000 in fiscal year 2024 to fund one or two projects aiming to increase the presence and participation of women, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities, people of low socioeconomic status, and other underrepresented groups at all levels of philosophy. The APA board of officers strongly prefers proposals that convincingly demonstrate their potential to decisively impact diversity and inclusion within philosophy. As the APA operates primarily in the US and Canada, programs must have a clear application to diversity in a US/Canada context. The board wishes to express its particular interest in supporting programs that explicitly address more than one type of diversity (e.g., gender and race/ethnicity). The board will give preference to projects based at under-resourced institutions. All APA members are invited to submit proposals.

CSWEP-SSRC Women in Economics Research Consortium Call for Proposals
Amount: Up to $200,000
Deadline: Rolling until August 31, 2023

The CSWEP-SSRC Women in Economics Research Consortium invites proposals to rigorously evaluate potentially scalable interventions designed to increase the numbers and success of women in the economics profession. We particularly encourage proposals that involve collaborations with implementing partners on college and university campuses. We also encourage replications of previously evaluated interventions, especially replications that evaluate the scalability and external validity of previously evaluated interventions. Projects may begin as early as September 2023 and have timelines of up to 18 months. (No-cost extensions will be available to enable longer periods of observation). Budgets should not exceed $200,000 in total costs, with indirect costs not exceeding a total of 10% of direct costs.
