VPR INTERNAL FUNDING PROGRAMS
The Office of the Vice President for Research manages a number of funding and award programs designed to pilot new research ideas or equipment; advance the scholarly and creative research profile of the university; promote a culture of scholarship and a sense of belonging across our global, national, and local communities; and recognize the outstanding achievements of research faculty across campus.
All current VPR-sponsored funding and award programs are listed below.
All program guidelines have been updated for FY24 competitions. Application links will be provided when available.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENTATION FUND
FY24 Deadline:
11:59pm (MST) on Wednesday, January 10th, 2024
Award Amount:
Up to $250,000
Description:
The Research Instrumentation Fund (RIF) provides support to faculty and core facilities for new equipment purchases, or to replace/upgrade existing research equipment. Equipment purchased with RIF funds is meant to be shared as broadly as possible and should be used to facilitate externally funded research and scholarship.
FACULTY SMALL GRANT PROGRAM
FY24 Deadlines:
Fall 2023 Cycle: 11:59pm (MST) on Tuesday, October 3, 2023
Spring 2024 Cycle: 11:59pm (MST) on Tuesday, March 12, 2024
Award Amount:
up to $10,000
Description:
The Faculty Small Grant Program (FSGP) provides grants of up to $10,000 over 1 year to support scholarly publications and creative research.
RESEARCH INCENTIVE SEED GRANT PROGRAM

Description:
The goal of the Research Incentive Seed Grant Program is to support investigators in collecting preliminary data in new, innovative research areas that will be leveraged for extramural grant applications. This program is conducted in coordination with each individual College.
FACULTY FELLOW AWARDS
FY24 Deadline:
11:59pm (MST) on Thursday, October 5, 2023
Award Amount:
$15,000 is provided to awardee's department to offset cost of release.
Description:
The Faculty Fellow Awards (FFA) provide a semester of full release time (from teaching and administrative tasks) at full salary to eligible faculty for scholarly or creative research projects. $15,000 is provided to the awardee’s department to defer the cost of the release time.
DISTINGUISHED RESEARCH AWARDS

Award Amount:
Up to $10,000
Description:
The Distinguished Research Award (DRA) is a prestigious award that recognizes outstanding achievements in research by University of Utah faculty. The DRA provides the faculty member with a $10,000 grant for research and/or creative pursuits.
CBR - PARTNERSHIP FORMATION GRANTS

Thursday, September 7th, 2023 by 11:59pm (MST)
Award Amount:
up to $10,000
Description:
The Community-Based Research (CBR) Grants Program seeks to support research partnerships between academic researchers and community-based partners that inquire into and address real-world issues through an approach rooted in equity and inclusion. The goal of the Partnership Formation Grant Program is to build and foster new relationships between community-based and campus-based partners.
CBR - PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION GRANTS
FY24 Deadline:
The CBR Project Implementation Grant Program completed it's initial pilot cycle. The VPR is currently evaluating pilot data and will determine FY24 competition details later this year.

Community-Based Research (CBR) Grants seek to support research partnerships between academic researchers and community-based partners that inquire into and address real-world issues through an approach rooted in equity and inclusion. The CBR Project Implementation Grant Program is designed to support projects that are based in an established partnership with community partners and have been designed in collaboration with partners.

LIMITED SUBMISSIONS INFORMATION
Limited Submission Opportunities (LSO) are extramural funding opportunities that limit the number of applications submitted per institution. The link below contains all University of Utah LSO information and best practices, including how and where to apply, standard timelines and materials, etc.
REQUEST A NO-COST EXTENSION
If a VPR-sponsored project cannot be completed in the initial award period, the Investigator may submit a single no-cost extension request to be reviewed and approved by the VPR. NCE requests must be submitted using the webform found below.
